Support & Resistance
If you only learn one concept in technical analysis, make it support and resistance. Almost every strategy — breakouts, pullbacks, ranges, smart-money zones — is built on top of it.
What support and resistance really are
Support is a zone where buying pressure has historically overcome selling, causing price to bounce. Resistance is the opposite — a zone where sellers have overcome buyers and price stalls. Crucially, these are zones, not exact lines: think of them as areas of interest where orders cluster.
Role reversal: the key insight
When price decisively breaks resistance, that level often becomes support — and vice versa. This 'role reversal' is one of the highest-probability concepts in trading and the basis of the breakout-retest entry you'll learn next.
Instead of chasing a breakout, wait for price to return and retest the broken level as its new role. The risk is defined and the reward-to-risk is far better.
What makes a level significant?
- 1Number of touches — more reactions = more significance
- 2Volume — high volume at a level confirms its importance
- 3Timeframe — a weekly level outranks a 5-minute level
- 4Recency and reaction strength — sharp, recent rejections matter most
Don't obsess over the exact price. Mark a zone and expect wicks to overshoot it slightly — stop-hunts thrive on traders who place stops one tick beyond an exact line.
Putting it to work
Mark the obvious higher-timeframe levels first, then drop down to refine. Plan your trades around them: buy reactions at support in an uptrend, sell reactions at resistance in a downtrend, and trade the break-and-retest when a level gives way. Combine with trend and you have the skeleton of a complete strategy.
Key takeaways
- Support = buyers defend · Resistance = sellers defend
- They are ZONES, not exact lines
- Broken resistance → support (and vice versa)
- Significance = touches + volume + timeframe
- Best entry: break-and-retest of a level

Frequently asked questions
Always a zone. Price frequently overshoots exact levels with wicks. Marking a zone keeps you from being stopped out by normal noise.
